Atheseus's story isn't a highlight reel. It's a record of decisions made in difficult circumstances, one after another, that changed the direction of his life.
A childhood on the move
Atheseus experienced homelessness as a child and grew up moving constantly across California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and later the east coast, without the stability most people take for granted.
A 4th grade teacher who changed everything
In the classroom of Ms. Aston, his first Black teacher, Atheseus won the school and district spelling bees and finished the year working years ahead of grade level. Her simple standard, study hard, ask questions, be prepared, strive for excellence, became the foundation for everything that followed.
Leaving high school to work
In the 11th grade, Atheseus was told to drop out and go to work to help pay household expenses, a point that could easily have defined the rest of his life.
13 years in the U.S. Navy
He enlisted and served for 13 years, trading uncertainty for structure, discipline, and a sense of purpose larger than himself.
Earning his degree while on active duty
While still serving, Atheseus completed a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Columbia College.
Florida State University College of Law
After leaving active duty, he attended FSU College of Law on a full academic scholarship and has practiced as an attorney for the last 23 years.
Coming full circle
Years later, Atheseus reconnected with his 4th grade teacher, now Dr. Gloria Aston-Baynes, and stood in the room when she received the YWCA Lifetime Achievement Award, thanking her in person for giving a poor Black boy hope and a foundation for excellence.
